James Allen Byrd and Rayshawn Thomas were fighting inside Byrd’s apartment on Tracy Circle, on the West Side, at approximately 1:27 a.m., when Byrd produced a small-caliber firearm and shot Thomas more than once, Homicide Unit Sgt. Dave Sicilian said.

Officers and paramedics found Byrd, 53, in front of the apartment building suffering from a minor wound to his hand. Sicilian says Byrd was treated and released from Mount Carmel West Hospital and charged with murder.

Thomas, 28, was taken to Mount Carmel in critical condition and died less than an hour later, Sicilian said.

This is the 59th Homicide in Columbus in 2016.
