COLUMBUS – Joe Burrow has taken home the Heisman Trophy and has a chance to add a national championship to his resume before embarking on an NFL career so it’s not surprising that the LSU quarterback is being honored in his Ohio hometown.
The Athens City School District Board of Education Thursday night voted to name the Athens High School Football Stadium in The Plains the “Joe Burrow Stadium.”
The board also instructed the district’s administrators to work with the school’s athletic booster clubs to plan a ceremony.
Burrow was a member of the 2014-2015 Athens High School football team, leading the Bulldogs to a 14-1 record, with the only loss being in the state championship game.
Burrow was Ohio Mr. Football and was recruited to play at Ohio State, though he transferred to LSU two years ago.
As part of his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, Burrow recognized Athens and southeast Ohio, calling attention to high poverty and food shortages there, inspiring a fundraising campaign that resulted in over $400,000 in contributions to the Athens County Food Bank.
