Authorities seek “wired” energy drink thief

COLUMBUS – When authorities catch up with Corey Jay Meadows, he’ll probably be awake.

The South Side man has two warrants for his arrest after being accused of stealing 103 cases of 5-Hour Energy supplements valued at $1582.57, according to a release from the office of Columbus City Attorney Rick Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer’s office says that is enough of the energy drink to provide 165 straight days of non-stop energy.

“He is either a cog in an organized theft ring or one seriously wired energy drink addict who hasn’t slept in months,” said assistant City Prosecutor Bill Hedrick.

Meadows, 30, allegedly stole the drinks from two Columbus Meijer stores and one in Grove City.

On April 25, Meadows allegedly “cleaned out the entire shelf” of 5-Hour Energy from a West Side Meijer store, stealing 64 assorted cases containing a total of 480 bottles with a total retail value of over $970.

On May 5, Pfeiffer says Meadows swept his arm across store shelves, clearing them of 39 cases containing 314 bottles of the drink and putting them and into his cart.

While bolting from the store, he abandoned his overloaded shopping cart and jumped into a getaway car described as a blue Ford Fiesta, Pfeiffer said.

Meadows also is believed to be connected to another theft of about $680 worth of the drinks from a Meijer store located in Grove City.

Meadows has been charged with multiple counts of theft.
