COLUMBUS – A 70-year-old Westerville man died when he was struck while riding his bicycle after dark without lights in Blendon Township Sunday.
Ernesto Valdespino was riding northbound on Sunbury Road in the center of the left lane with no lights at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Sunbury Road when the bicycle was hit from the rear at Yellowhammer Drive by a 1997 Jeep Cherokee driven by Leiland Al-Asaad of Columbus, Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said.
Valdespino was pronounced deceased by Westerville Fire Department medics at 6:41 p.m.
Valdespino was not wearing a helmet or any reflective clothing at the time of the crash, Baldiwin said.
No other injuries were reported, Baldwin said.
There is no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash, which remains under investigation.
