COLUMBUS – Asking the Internet for suggestions is risky business, but the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles took the plunge when it began asking for suggestions this week for names for its new mascot.
The new character made its debut Tuesday on the BMV’s Facebook page with a request for names, and an admonition that “only appropriate names will be considered.”
Suggestions are being accepted until the end of the business day on Friday and the mascot will appear in public for the first time at the Ohio State Fair, bureau spokeswoman Lindsey Bohrer said.
According to a report on Cleveland.com, early suggestions included “Platey McPlateFace,” inspired by “Boaty McBoatface, chosen earlier this year for a British Natural Environment Research Council polar research ship.
Other possible names, among the 209 comments on the post Friday morning: “Taggy,” “Tag McPlates,” “Bucky,” “Opie the O-Plate,” “Plato,” “Bumper” and “Increasy McFees.”
More than one suggestion paid tribute to Ohio’s winter weather (“Salty” and “Slushy”) and one write suggest “’Wait’ because that’s what I do at the BMV.”
