Bomb squad called to Newark motel

COLUMBUS – Two people are under arrest after the Columbus bomb squad checked out potential explosives at a Newark motel overnight, a police spokesman said.

Newark Police responded to a report that gunshots may have been fired during a disturbance at the University Inn, 1219 W. Church Street around midnight and found a person who claimed to have been assaulted but refused treatment, Sgt. Clint Eskins.

While on the scene, Eskins says the officers discovered suspected counterfeit money in the room and in the parking lot as well as a truck which had been reported stolen from Zanesville.

They also determined that the shots that had been reported were from the discharge of a flare gun found nearby, along with materials believed to be either explosive or incendiary, Eskins said.

The Columbus Division of Fire Bomb Squad was called to the scene to investigate and collect the materials.

A man and woman were arrested and Eskins says the case will be referred to a grand jury for charges.
