COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye defensive end Joey Bosa was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press Tuesday, bringing him closer to consensus All-America status.
Bosa had already been named to the first-team by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. “Consensus All-Americans” are those named first-team All-America by at least three of five organizations: Associated Press, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, American Football Coaches Association and The Sporting News.
Ohio State is tied for the most consensus All-Americans in the Big Ten with 78.
A finalist for the Lombardi, the Bednarik and the Ted Hendricks awards this season, Bosa recorded 50 tackles on the year and ranks fifth nationally in sacks.
Redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett and senior defensive tackle Michael Bennett were each named third-team Associated Press All-Americans.
Along with Ohio State, the four football playoff semifinalists are well represented on the first team. The Buckeyes’ opponent in the semifinal at the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 can boast one: ReceiverAmari Cooper, third in the Heisman voting, made the first team, too.
Florida State leads the way with three: tight end Nick O’Leary, guard Tre Jackson and kicker Roberto Aguayo, who is an All-American for the second straight season.
Heisman winner Marcus Mariota is the first Oregon Ducks quarterback to be an All-American. The second-seeded Ducks will play third-seeded Florida State on Jan. 1 at the Rose Bowl.
