COLUMBUS, Ohio – COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus police say 911 and other services were not disrupted by a broken sprinkler pipe that caused “substantial” damage to the police division’s downtown headquarters overnight.
It was just one of many broken water pipes that caused problems around the Columbus area in the wake of the bitter cold snap that froze pipes, causing many of them to burtst.
Not the least of those was the major water line that broke and spilled water across downtown streets, blocks from the Ohio Statehouse, Monday night. Repair work on the line was completed Tuesday afternoon but cleanup of the damaged road surface near 4th and Broad Ssreets is expected to continue through Friday.
The break in a line running beneath the street left a busy intersection covered in muddy water Monday and frigid temperatures slowed the repairs
The head of the department, Greg Davies, told The Columbus Dispatch that extremely cold weather likely was a factor in the break, but officials weren’t certain of the cause.
The city said a boil alert issued for some buildings in the area would remain in effect until water testing was completed.
