Buckeyes advance in NCAA tourney

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Ohio State upset sixth-seeded Iowa State in the opening round of the Midwest Region.

The 62-59 victory earned the 11th-seeded Buckeyes a second-round game against Houston.

Kaleb Wesson had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ohio State.

Keyshawn Woods added 19 points.

Iowa State led just once in the second half but had a chance to send the game into overtime when Nick Weiler-Babb missed an open 3.

Luka Garza scored 20 points, Jordan Bohannon made a three-point play during Iowa’s closing surge, and the 10th-seeded Hawkeyes rallied for a 79-72 victory over No. 7 Cincinnati in opening-round action at Nationwide Arena Friday.

The Big Ten sent eight teams into the field, the most in its history, and won seven of its first eight games, Wisconsin’s loss to Oregon the only blemish in the opening round.

North Carolina completed a perfect first round for top seeds in this NCAA Tournament, but not before Iona became the latest No. 16 seed to show these matchups are no sure thing.

Cameron Johnson scored 21 points, and North Carolina quickly erased a five-point halftime deficit to hot-shooting Iona, going on to win 88-73 in Columbus.

The Tar Heels advanced in the Midwest Region and will face Washington in the second round.
