Buckeyes move up in polls

COLUMBUS – The Buckeyes gained two spots in both major college football polls after beating arch-rival Michigan on Saturday.

Clemson continues to hold onto the top spot in the Associated Press top 15 and the Amway coaches’ polls.

Iowa is ranked No. 3 in the coaches’ poll and fourth in the media poll, trading places with Oklahoma.

Michigan State, who handed Ohio State its only loss, is No. 5 in both polls.

The Hawkeyes and Spartans play Saturday in the Big Ten Championship game with the winner virtually guaranteed a spot in the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings when they are released Dec. 6.

The Buckeyes are on the outside of the top four, looking in, and only stand a chance of moving into a national semifinal game if Clemson, Alabama and Stanford lose their conference championship games.

The Cardinal, North Carolina, Clemson’s opponent in the ACC title game; Notre Dame and Florida State round out the top 10.

NOTE…Ohio State junior running back Ezekiel Elliott was named the Big Ten’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week rushing for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries in the Buckeyes’ victory at Michigan. He tied a school record with his fifth career 200-yard rushing game and recorded his sixth rush of over 50 yards this season, the 12th of his career, with a 66-yard run to set up the Buckeyes’ first score of the game.
