Young benched for Maryland game over “possible NCAA issue”

MCOLUMBUS – Ohio State defensive end Chase Young, considered by many to be the best college football player in the nation, will not play for the Buckeyes when they host Maryland Saturday, according to a statement from the Department of Athletics.

The school said he would not play because of a “possible NCAA issue” dating back to last year, which the university is looking into.

As a key part of a defense that has allowed only six touchdowns all season — and only two in the last 12 quarters — the junior defensive end leads the nation in sacks with 13.5 and tied a school record with four in the Oct. 26 win over Wisconsin.

In a post on his Twitter feed, Young explains that he accepted a loan from a family friend, which he repaid last year.

At 3-6, Maryland might look like a pushover for Ohio State, No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, but the Terrapins threw a scare into the Buckeyes last season as Ohio State survived with a 52-51 overtime triumph in College Park.

However, more than one opponent this season – Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Michigan State – didn’t look like pushovers until Ohio State knocked them for a loop.

Nationally, all eyes are on the matchup between No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Alabama, the first game between the two SEC West powerhouses since the Tigers and Crimson Tide met in 2011. The loser still has a path to the playoff if it wins out and a one-loss Georgia falls in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

The other big game Saturday is in Minneapolis, where fifth-ranked Penn State plays No. 13 Minnesota in another battle of unbeatens.

No. 18 Iowa visits No. 16 Wisconsin in a key Big Ten West game.

Georgia and Ohio State have scheduled a home-and-home series in 2030 and 2031. OSU travels to Sanford Stadium Sept. 14, 2030, while the Bulldogs will visit Ohio Stadium for the first time on Aug. 30, 2031.

The games will represent the first regular season contests for Ohio State vs. an SEC opponent since the the Buckeyes played a home-and-home series with LSU in the 1987 and 1988 seasons and the first meeting between the two teams since the 1993 Florida Citrus Bowl, won by Georgia, 21-14.
