Buckeyes up to 6th in polls following crazy weekend

COLUMBUS – Ohio State heads into its bye week at No. 6 in both major college football polls following a 66-17 win over Maryland.

The Buckeyes are one of the five Big Ten teams in the AP’s top 10, a first for that conference.

Iowa moved up a spot to second after winning a top-five showdown with Penn State, which dropped from No. 4 to No. 7.

Michigan, at No. 8, and 10th-ranked Michigan State are also in the top 10 following a wild weekend in college football.

Georgia is the new No. 1, taking the top spot in the regular season for the first time since November 1982.

The Bulldogs rise from No. 2 comes a day after preseason No. 1 Alabama was upset at Texas A&M.

The defending national champion Crimson Tide slipped four spots to No. 5 after its first loss of the season.

Cincinnati rose to third, followed by Oklahoma, giving hope for some fresh blood in the CFP semifinals.

Oregon was ranked ninth.

Stroud wins Big Ten weekly honors

OSU quarterback C.J. Stroud was named the Big Ten’s Freshman and co-Offensive Player of the Week.

In a 66-17 win over Maryland on Saturday, the redshirt freshman from Empire, Calif., completed 24-of-33 passes for 406 yards and matched his career high with five touchdown passes, becoming the first Ohio State quarterback to throw for 400 yards, five TDs and zero interceptions in a game and just the second with back-to-back five touchdown performances.

Stroud has been the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week three times previously.

Indiana game in prime time

After an off-week, Ohio State travels to Indiana for a 7:30 p.m. game on ABC.
