Buckeyes up to No. 3 in polls

COLUMBUS – After winning a top-10 matchup, Ohio State moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll.

The move was the result of the Buckeyes’ come-from-behind 27-26 victory at Penn State Saturday night.

Ohio State moved past Clemson for the third spot, just behind top-ranked Alabama and Georgia.

The Buckeyes were also No. 3 in the coaches’ poll but AP college football write Ralph Russo is one who believes Ohio State deserves to be in the top two.

If you take away the four plays of 80-plus yards the Buckeye defense has surrendered, OSU is allowing 4.4 yards per play, 12th best in the nation, Russo write, saying the Buckeyes should be No. 2 in the AP survey after two good wins away from Columbus.

LSU remains fifth, Notre Dame surged two spots to sixth. The Tigers dropped one spot with Saturday’s 27-23 comeback win against visiting Syracuse.

West Virginia and Washington moved into the top 10 and Oklahoma fell to No. 7.

Buckeyes dominated the Big Ten’s weekly player-of-the week awards after the 27-26 victory at Happy Valley.

Sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins is the offensive player of the week for the third time this season and the second consecutive week and sophomore defensive end Chase Young has been named the league’s co-defensive player of the week after stepping to try to fill the big shoes of Nick Bosa, who is out indefinitely with an injury.

Haskins threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns, including 7 of 10 throwing for 138 yards and two touchdown passes in the quarter, capping the Buckeuyes’ rally with 75- and 96-yard scoring drives inside of eight minutes to play.

Young totaled six tackles, three for losses and two of those quarterback sacks.

He ended a third quarter Nittany Lions drive with a tipped pass on fourth down and made the final tackle of the game, stopping Penn State’s Miles Sanders for a loss on a fourth-and-5 from the OSU 43 that snuffed out the Lions’ final chance for a win with 1:16 left to play.
