Capital plans women’s “day of action”

COLUMBUS – Capital University is planning a grassroots “day of action” on its Bexley campus to mark International Women’s Day Thursday.

The event, scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., features a discussions on timely gender-related issues – including the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, gun rights, beauty standards and the political landscape.

Speakers include Meagan Matteson, the leader of the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and Jill Davis from the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The theme for the 2018 event is #PressForProgress,

The first women’s day was observed in February 1909 when 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York demanding improved pay, shorter hours and voting rights.

In 1975, the United Nations proclaimed the year International Women’s Year and christened March 8 as Women’s Day.
