Capital University’s welcome ceremony “Zoom-bombed”

COLUMBUS – Capital University’s virtual welcome to students and parents was marred by a “Zoom-bombing” incident.

Welcome Weekend at the Bexley university kicked off Thursday with a virtual address featuring a prayer from university pastor Rev. Drew Tucker and remarks from Interim President David Kaufman.

Midway through Kaufman’s address, the Zoom feed was taken over by a random user, known only as “iPhone,” used the group meeting site’s “screen share” feature to take over the call and display pornographic images, according to a report in The Chimes, the school’s student newspaper.

Shortly after the anonymous user left the call, the newspaper reported that a separate user started yelling expletives.

Soon after this happened, everyone in the call was muted, and the call was promptly ended by the university, the newspaper reported.

This isn’t the first time Capital has been “Zoom-bombed.” This past spring, a string of similar incidents occurred at other events, according to the report.

The search for the offenders continues, the Open Ceremony was postponed but the remainder of the weekend events are expected continue.
