CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) – It’s not clear as to how long Andrew Wiggins will be a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers but a person familiar with the negotiations says the Cavs will sign the No. 1 overall pick in the near future.
Wiggins has been linked to a possible trade with Minnesota for All-Star forward Kevin Love. The person familiar with the talks says Wiggins will sign with Cleveland as early as today.
The Cavs and Timberwolves have had ongoing discussions about a trade for Love since before the draft. The Timberwolves have always insisted that Wiggins be involved in any package, a stipulation the Cavaliers have resisted.
If the Cavs and Wiggins work out a deal, a trade for Love would not be able to be consummated for 30 days but the Cavs made a move on Tuesday to clear some salary-cap space.
A person familiar with the trade says the Cavaliers have sent guard Carrick Felix to Utah for three players with non-guaranteed contracts, a deal to give them more assets to go after Love.
The Cavs sent Felix, a second-round pick in 2015, and $1 million to the Jazz for guard John Lucas III and forwards Malcolm Thomas and Erik Murphy.
The moves will allow the Cavs to clear $3.3 million in salary cap space.
