CBJ winning despite roster gaps

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Blue Jackets have won six of their seven preseason games despite being without three of their top players.

Matt Calvert had two goals and an assist and rookie Marko Dano also scored twice in the third period in Wednesday night’s 6-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Nationwide Arena.

Michael Chaput and Artem Anisimov added goals for the Blue Jackets (6-1-0) and Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves.

The Blue Jackets open the 2014-15 regular season at Buffalo Oct. 9.

The victory came hours after the team announced that forward Boone Jenner is expected to be sidelined approximately five weeks with a broken left hand.

Jenner suffered the injury when he was struck by a puck in practice on Sunday and underwent successful surgery Wednesday performed by Dr. Gary Millard at Grant Medical Center, general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said.

Jenner, who scored 16 goals and notched 33 assists as a rookie a year ago, is the third top forward not with the club.

Leading-scorer Ryan Johansen is in the middle of a contract dispute and last year’s top free-agent signing, Nathan Horton, is not practicing due to a bad back.

Johansen left Columbus on the eve of the opening of training camp after team officials said he turned down offers of $6 million for two years, $32 million for six and $46 million over eight years.

Now the club is proceeding as if Johansen will not play.
