CFP expansion may take months to work out

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — College Football Playoff expansion took another step forward this week.

The full group of commissioners who manage the postseason spent about six hours over two days digging into a proposal to expand from four teams to 12.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says it will be months before the process comes to a close.

In a 12-team format, six spots would be reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions and and the other six would be at-large sports.

The plan calls for first-round games played on campuses.

Quarterfinal and semifinals would be bowl games.
