COLUMBUS – A century-old tradition returns to the streets of Columbus Saturday as hundreds of volunteers collect funds for Charity Newsies.
From 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., more than 400 volunteers will station themselves on streets corners in their familiar white jumpsuits and sell special edition newspapers to raise funds which will be used to buy school clothing for thousands of children in Columbus.
“And this year the need is even greater because we are seeing an increase of about 20 percent of the number of kids that we’re going to clothe this year,” said Board President Steve Chandler. He expects the funds raised Saturday to help buy clothing for 12,000 children.
Since its beginnings in 1907, Charity Newsies has provided new clothing to more than 500,000 schoolchildren. Last year, students from 415 schools, representing every school district in Franklin County, received new pants, shirts, socks, a coat, a winter hat, gloves, undergarments and a voucher for new shoes from Charity Newsies.
