COLUMBUS – Columbus police say a three-year-old girl accidentally shot by her four-year-old brother on the West Side Tuesday is expected to recover.
The girl was shot and critically hurt when the boy apparently picked up and discharged a gun that had been left within her reach at a home on Glenwood Avenue, according to WBNS 10-TV.
“It’s our understanding it was recovered from a common area of the house and was loaded ready at hand,” Det. Jay Fulton said.
Police believe the family had the gun ready, fearing for their safety after recent problems.
“Just hope that this can serve as a reminder to keep these firearms secured,” Fulton said.
The television station reported that, once the investigation is complete, detectives will talk with the prosecutor’s office about possible charges.
