Child dies in Franklinton fire

COLUMBUS (AP) — A fire official says a child is dead and another is in critical condition after an overnight blaze in a Franklinton apartment building.

Columbus Battalion Chief Tracy Smith tells WBNS-TV that the fire broke out in a Columbus apartment complex around 1 a.m. Thursday morning. The complex is near state Route 315.

The mother of the children and an 11-month-old baby were treated on scene. They are expected to live.

Investigators believe the fire started in the basement.

Three people trapped on a third story balcony were also rescued.

Half a dozen units were affected.
