City closing in on homicide record

COLUMBUS – Columbus is only four homicides short of setting a new record for a single year after the deaths of three people over the weekend.

Officers responding to a reported shooting on Enclave Boulevard at 10:09 a.m. Sunday found a 19-year-old man, who had been shot inside one of the condominiums.

Jeffrey Hairston, 19,  was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Eric Pilya of the Homicide Unit said.

This is the 140th homicide of 2020 in Columbus.

The highest number of homicides ever recorded in a single year in the city was 143 in 2017.

It was the second fatal shooting at the same complex in less than a week, police said.

A 22-year-old man who had been found shot multiple times on the same street on Wednesday died from his injuries Saturday morning, Sgt. David Shimberg said.

Giante Adaway was found at approximately 7:00 p.m. by officers dispatched to the area of 5029 Enclave Boulevard on the report of a shooting.

Officers called to the 1400 block of Briarwood Avenue just before 3:55 a.m. Saturday found a 57-year-old man seated in a parked pickup truck, suffering injuries from an assault, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

What prompted the assault and who might have been involved are still under investigation.

The death of a man whose body was found in a shallow grave in Franklinton on Thursday was ruled the 136th homicide of the year by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office on Saturday, Shimberg said.

The body of a man identified as Frank Walters, 37, was found after a man took officers to a wooded area north of the intersection of N. Skidmore Street and Scott Street Wednesday afternoon.

A suspect has been identified, and murder warrant has been filed but information on the suspect was not released Saturday morning, Shimberg said.
