City records 113th homicide of 2017

COLUMBUS – The number of homicides in Columbus has matched a 25-year high after the body of a man was found in a home in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood Tuesday morning.

UPDATE 6:27 a.m. 11/9: The victim has been identified as Tray Lee Bays, 30.

Columbus police officers and fire personnel dispatched to a home in the 500 block of E. 2nd Avenue, near Cleveland Avenue, at approximately 10:33 a.m. to check out a report of a man inside the home who was “not responding,” found the victim, whose name was being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, according to Sgt. Dave Sicilian of the Homicide Unit.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and Sicilian says evidence at the scene indicated he was murdered, the 113th homicide victim in Columbus in 2017, matching the total number of murders in 1992, which was the second highest total since 1991.

The highest number of murders in any year in the city was 139 in 1991.
