City wants input on proposal to lighten pot punishment

COLUMBUS – Columbus City Council wants to know what residents think about a proposal to relax restrictions on marijuana possession in the city.

City Council has launched an online survey to give residents an opportunity to provide input on the proposed marijuana reform package, which would lower fines for possessing small amounts of marijuana.

A second public hearing is scheduled for Thursday at City Hall.

The key elements to the proposal include reducing fines and and increasing funds for Legal Aid attorneys to help seal records for minor convictions that could be a hurdle to employment.

Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo are among the Ohio cities that have taken steps to decriminalize marijuana, which is legal for medicinal purposes statewide.
