City’s homicide tally climbs

COLUMBUS – As police investigate the 127th homicide of the year in Columbus, they are also trying to determine if the death of a man whose body was found in a wooded area in Prairie Township will add to the total.

Belva Copeland, 64, was found dead inside an apartment on Marion Drive on the Southeast Side at 1:26 p.m. Wednesday by officers called to the address and was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

The cause of death had not been determined and no suspect was available early Friday.

Officers found the body of a man in a wooded area between Gabriel’s Landing and Eaglecrest Drive shortly after 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

The man was pronounced dead by Prairie Township fire personnel and the death is being treated as suspicious, said Sgt. David Shimberg.

The victim’s name is being withheld until a positive identification is made and his family notified.
