Cleanup continues after corn cars crash

DELAWARE, Ohio – Authorities are working to clear nearly three dozen rail cars from tracks northeast of Delaware where part of a train hauling corn derailed yesterday afternoon, sending the cars off the tracks and spilling their contents.

Emergency responders say no one was hurt when 34 cars in the middle of a southbound Norfolk Southern train derailed near Horseshoe Road at 1:42 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the derailment wasn’t immediately clear.

The derailment damaged Norfolk Southern and CSX rail lines, said Sandy Mackey, public information coordinator for the Delaware County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

A statement from Norfolk Southern Corp. said it wasn’t sure how soon the scene might be cleared but Delaware County Sheriff Russell Martin says the goal was to have all of the cars off the track within 24 to 48 hours.

The train had a total of 87 loaded cars and three locomotives. Norfolk Southern says it was headed from Clarksfield, in northern Ohio, to Loudon, Tenn.
