Cleveland steps in to host first debate

WASHINGTON – The first debate between President Trump and former VP Joe Biden will be in Cleveland on Sept. 29, hosted by Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates made that announcement Monday after Notre Dame withdrew as host of one of this fall’s three scheduled debates amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Notre Dame was set to host the inaugural face-off between the Republican president and his Democratic challenger but became the second university to bow out amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a release, Notre Dame President the Rev. John Jenkins says, “The necessary health precautions would have greatly diminished the educational value of hosting the debate on our campus.”
