Clippers 7, Knights 6

CHARLOTTE – A two-run home run by Eris Stamets and two RBI base hits by Ronny Rodriguez led the Clippers to a 7-6 victory over the Charlotte Knights in the opening game of a four-game series.

Columbus has won nine of its last 11 games.

With the Knights leading 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Eric Stamets lifted his two-run shot to left. Rodriguez brought another run home with a double to left and Giovanny Urshela gave the Clippers a 4-3 lead with another double.

Charlotte tied the score in the bottom of the inning but Rodriguez’s double to left field brought in two runs and Richie Shaffer accounted for the game-winner with a sacrifice fly.

Cole Sulser (1-0) struck out five hitters in 1 2/3 innings to get his first win of the season.

Carson Fulmer (6-5) started for the Knights and gave up seven runs on six hits over four innings to take the loss.

The two teams continue the series from BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night.
