DURHAM – It was not a night for a relief pitcher to pad his stats, nor for fans to leave the ballpark early, as the Clippers and Durham unleashed a 16-run barrage of scoring in the 11th inning with Columbus hanging on for a 13-9 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Wednesday.
Durham tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth and the clubs went scoreless over the next four innings.
The Clippers broke the game open with 10 runs on seven hits, four walks, and a hit batter to take a 13-3 lead. The Bulls’ 11th-inning rally came up short.
Giovanny Urshela’s grand slam to left field and Erik Gonzalez’s two-run triple to center highlighted the scoring rampage by Columbus.
Josh Martin (1-1) got the win for the Clippers while Johnny Field (0-1) gave up three runs in the 11th and was saddled with the loss.
The Bulls (21-10) and Clippers (13-18) will play the finale of their four-game series Thursday morning at 10:35 a.m.
