Columbus area unemployment up 0.6%

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Unemployment in central Ohio increased to 6.0 percent in January from 5.4 percent in December, according to data released Tuesday morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Ohio officials said Friday the state’s unemployment rate dropped slightly in January to 6.9 percent.

The Columbus area saw a decline of 29,900 jobs from December to January, led by losses in trade, transportation, utilities, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, mining, logging, construction and manufacturing.

The jobless rate was 1.1 percent lower than what it was in January of 2013.

Employment in the region increased by 4,700 from last year, powered by gains in the service sector.
