Columbus City Council tackles police reform

COLUMBUS – Columbus City Council will take action Monday night on a package of police reform ordinances.

The four-part safety initiative includes creating a civilian review board and mandating independent investigations of police actions, conducting background checks to see if any police officers were affiliated with hate groups, amending the city’s purchasing policies to eliminate the acquisition of military equipment for the Division of Police, and eliminating no-knock warrants.

The calls for reform grew in the wake of disturbances and confrontations between police and protesters demonstrating downtown after the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.
