COLUMBUS — Valentín Castellanos scored the tying goal with a 35-yard shot in the 76th minute and New York City FC held on for a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew SC in the final match before the Concacaf Gold Cup break.
Crew SC (6-9-2, 17 pts.), playing its first match without forward Federico Higuain, snapped a three-game losing streak.
Higuain will be out for the season after undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery following an injury suffered in a match at Colorado May 25.
Columbus forward Gyasi Zardes scored the match’s first goal on a penalty shot in the 28th minute and Pedro Santos gave the Crew SC a 2-1 lead when he placed a ball from David Accam to the far post in the 61st minute.
NYCFC (4-1-8) extended its unbeaten streak to an MLS-best nine games.
