COLUMBUS – When the Columbus Crew SC hosts in-state rival FC Cincinnati at Mapfre Stadium Sunday, someone will be returning after a long absence: fans.
The team announced Thursday that is will permit 1,500 spectators to be in the stands, adhering to the state’s directive that attendance at sporting events be limited to 15% of an outdoor facility’s fixed seating capacity or 1,00 individuals, whichever is fewer. The capacity at Mapfre Stadium is a little over 19,000.
In determining their health and safety protocols, Crew officials say they consulted with government health officials, Major League Soccer and a leading sports architecture firm.
Tailgating will be prohibited in the parking lots, fans and stadium staff will be required to wear face coverings and seating configurations will allow for six feet of social distancing between groups of family members or friends.
Sunday’s “Hell is Real” derby match (7:30 p.m./Sports Timer Ohio) is part of Phase One of the MLS continuation of play schedule.
It marks the fifth all-time regular season meeting between the two clubs since 2019.
