Cruel summer continues

COLUMBUS – After a brief lull, a summer spate of violence in Columbus resumed early Wednesday with the deadly shooting of a man on the Hilltop.

Officers responding to a reported shooting at 67 N. Wheatland Ave at approximately 12:25 a.m. found Deangelo Cummings, 32, on the front porch suffering from a gunshot wound, Homicide Unit Sgt. David Shimberg said.

He was pronounced dead at 12: 33 a.m., the victim of the 59th homicide of the year in Columbus.

Homicides in Columbus were up 40% in June over June 2019 and by more than 50% increase over the city’s three-year average, police said. Felonious assaults involving a gun in June were up more than 200%.
