COLUMBUS – Five different Clippers knocked balls out of Huntington Park Tuesday but it was nowhere near enough to keep up with the Iowa Cubs, who smacked Columbus, 15-7, in the opener of a six-game series.
Nolan Jones, Connor Marabell, Andres Gimenez, Jordan Luplow and Trenton Brooks all went yard but the Cubs banged out 14 hits, including three homers of their own, on the way to the win.
After the Cub built an 8-2 lead in the first four innings, the Clippers narrowed it to 8-6 on the homers by Marabell, Gimenez and Luplow, Tony Cingrani and Jake Jewell kept Columbus off the board over the final 2 1/3 innings while their teammates scored another half dozen runs.
