Cyclist, motorcyclist killed in separate accidents

COLUMBUS – A Galloway man and a Canal Winchester woman were killed in separate traffic accidents in Columbus overnight.

Michelle Lynn Chambers, 42, of Canal Winchester, was killed just before midnight when her motorcycle collided with a car driven by Robin Robinson, 37, also of Canal Winchester, at the intersection of Gender Road and Pfeifer Ash Drive, Det. Shane Karnes of the Accident Investigation Unit said.

Chambers was southbound on Gender Road when Robinson, who was driving in the oncoming lane in her Honda Accord, as Robinson turned left into an apartment complex. Karnes says Chambers, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the Honda 600F4i motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Matthew Goodwin, 24, of Galloway, was killed just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday when he was hit while riding his bicycle on I-71 on the Northeast Side.

At approximately 12:41 a.m., the Columbus Police radio room began getting calls reporting a man riding a bicycle southbound in the northbound lanes of I-71, between 17th and 11th Avenues, Sgt. Brooke Wilson of the Accident Investigation Unit said.

With cruisers en route, at approximately 12:45, Goodwin rode his bicycle into the northbound lanes of the interstate, near the 17th Av. exit ramp, where he was struck by a Honda Civic driven by Cory Smith, 24, of Gahanna, Wilson said.

Wilson says a Mercury Mariner driven by Roncoa Foster, 26, of Columbus, struck Goodwin’s bicycle.

Goodwin was taken to Grant Medical Center where Wilson says he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The interstate and some entrance and exit ramps were closed overnight during the investigation of the accident.
