Cyclists struck; one dies

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Northeast Side man was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault as a result of an accident that left one bicyclist dead and another seriously injured.

Verulo Valladares and Ana Maria Illescas-Gallegos were each walking their bicycles northbound on the west shoulder of Appian Way north of Morse Road shortly after 10:00 Monday night when police say Scott Haslehurst lost control of his car and hit them both, killing Illescas-Gallegos.

Accident investigators say Haslehurst, 32, was driving northbound on Appian Way when his 2014 Mazda 3 went left of center and drove onto the west shoulder of the street, hitting Illescas-Gallegos, sideswiping a tree, and hitting Valladares.

Police say Illescas-Gallegos was walking about 75 feet behind Valladares, but did not know each other and were walking separately.

Illescas-Gallegos, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene. Valladares, 41, was taken to Grant Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

Police say Haslehurst was uninjured and cooperated with the investigation.
