Day to receive contract extension through 2026

COLUMBUS – After leading the Buckeyes to a 13-1 record, a Big Ten championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff in his first full season as head football coach, Ryan Day has received a three-year contract extension.

If the extension is approved by the university’s Board of Trustees, Day will remain head coach of the Buckeyes at least through the 2026 football season, according to a Department of Athletics release Tuesday.

A committee of the board is expected to approve the contract extension Wednesday with a vote by the full board on Thursday.

Beginning July 1, Day will be paid $6 million per year through January 31, 2021 when the salary increases to $6.5 million for the 2021 season will be $6.5 million and his total compensation for the 2022 season will be $7.6 million.

His salary after Feb. 1, 2023 will be determined by Athletics Director Gene Smith and approved by the Trustees.

Ohio State went 9-0 in the Big Ten in 2019 and Day became the first Ohio State coach since 1979 to be named the conference’s Coach of the Year.
