Deadly break-in

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Police had named no suspects by Friday morning in the shooting death of a man during an apparent break-in at a Far West Side apartment Thursday afternoon.

Officers responding to a reported shooting on Cliff Creek Drive shortly after 2:45 p.m. found Thomas Burns inside the apartment with a gunshot wound, investigators said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about four hours later.

Detectives say it appears that the suspect broke into the apartment through a window and fled the scene before police arrived.

Burns, 52, is the 42nd homicide victim of 2014 in Columbus
