COLUMBUS – A Ross County sheriff’s deputy remained in the hospital Saturday after a shooting that began as an apparent ambush outside the sheriff’s office in downtown Chillicothe Thursday and ended with the suspect dead.
Nicholas Mitchell approached Sgt. Eric Kocheran at
approximately 5:00 p.m., reportedly claiming that someone had threatened his family and asking for help before opening fire, injuring Kocheran.
Kocheran fired back, wounding Mitchell, 42, who died later at a Chillicothe-area hospital, according to a statement from the office of Ohio Attorney General David Yost, who oversees the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, whic is investigating the incident.
Kocheran was transported to OhioHealth Medical Center, where he remained in serious condition Friday.
Mitchell was identified in the shooting through fingerprints.
BCI will turn the findings of its investigation over to the Ross County Prosecutor’s Office, Yost said.
