COLUMBUS — The Franklin County sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot Casey Goodson Jr. five times in the back is retiring next month.
Deputy Jason Meade will leave the agency July 2 on disability retirement, Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said Friday
He didn’t offer further details but issued a statement explaining his office does not control when a deputy is allowed to claim a disability.
My office has learned that Jason Meade has chosen to leave the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office on disability retirement effective July 2, 2021. Law Enforcement disability decisions are governed by state law and made by the pension system. As sheriff, I have no control or input over what the pension system decides with this or any other disability case. -Franklin Co. Sheriff Dallas Baldwin
Meade, who is white, killed Goodson, a 23-year-old Black man, in December.
Relatives say Goodson was opening the door to his grandmother’s house at the time.
The case remains under criminal investigation.
Meade hasn’t been charged.
A message was left with Meade’s attorney.
