Injuries in NE Side fire

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As many as 10 people were reportedly treated for injuries resulting from a three-alarm fire at a Northeast Side apartment complex Tuesday morning.

People were reported to be trapped and jumping from windows to escape the smoke and flames which broke out reported just before 8:10 a.m. in a three-story apartment building at the Victoria Village Commons apartments in the 4600 block of Tamarack Boulevard, north of Morse Road.

There was no immediate confirmation of reports that 10 people, including four children, were treated for injuries.

Battalion Chief Tracy Smith says one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that, according to Smith, four children were taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for smoke inhalation and six adults were taken to other hospitals. Two of them had jumped from the third floor and some of the victims were in serious condition.

In all, Smith says 37 companies responded to the fire in the 42-unit building, which suffered extensive damage, including the partial collapse of the roof.

Firefighters battled the flames from outside the building in a defensive mode due to the dangerous fire.

Streets around the fire scene were closed.
