Early voting setting record pace

COLUMBUS – With less than three weeks to go before Election Day, Ohioans are voting early in record numbers, according to state officials.

What you need to know to cast your vote

During the first week of early voting for the Nov. 3 general election, which began Oct. 6, 193,021 Ohioans voted early in-person, triple the number at the same point four years ago, Secretary of State Frank LaRose reported Tuesday.

Three weeks before Election Day in 2016, 64,312 voters had cast ballots in-person.

Almost 2.5 million absentee ballot applications received by county boards of elections, compared to 1.25 million in 2016. The deadline to request absentee ballots is Oct. 31.

How many drop boxes can each Ohio county set up for collecting absentee ballots, and where can they be located?

It’s a seemingly simple question with a complicated answer.

A flurry of sometimes conflicting court rulings on LaRose’s directive restricting the boxes to one per county, combined with steps LaRose, a Republican, has taken attempting to clarify the issue, have made it more confusing.

The back-and-forth battle turned back in LaRose’s favor last Friday with a decision in a federal appellate court approving his request to put on hold a lower federal judge’s decision to block his order.

The issue is currently before a federal court in Cleveland.
