COLUMBUS, Ohio – Half of the companies surveyed in Ohio, including Abercrombie & Fitch, Cardinal Health and Nationwide Insurance, got perfect scores from a prominent gay-rights organization.
The Human Rights Campaign listed 781 companies on its 2015 Corporate Equality Index, measuring corporate policies on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights.
“When it comes to LGBT equality, corporate America is a leader, not a follower. At every turn, from advocating for marriage equality to providing vital support for transgender employees, this country’s leading companies have asked, ‘what more can we do?,’ and they’ve worked tirelessly to achieve new progress,” HRC president Chad Griffin said.
The group ranks companies and law firms based on criteria like their non-discrimination policies, employment benefits, and LGBT diversity and inclusion.
A perfect score of 100 was earned by 13 of the 26 Ohio-based companies surveyed, including Huntington Bancshares, Macy’s Inc., and Owens Corning.
Dublin-based Wendy’s got a 60 and Bob Evans got a 45. The average score for companies and law firms based in Ohio was 84 percent.
The 366 companies nationwide that earned a 100 percent score was an increase from 304 in the 2014 report, and 189 two years ago, Griffin said.
