Ex-deputy state treasurer extradited from Pakistan

COLUMBUS (AP) – Federal prosecutors say a former Ohio deputy treasurer has been extradited from Pakistan to serve a 15-year prison sentence for a kickback scheme at the state treasurer’s office.

In a release, prosecutors say Amer Ahmad was extradited Wednesday and a court hearing set for Friday in the case.

Ahmad, 40, pleaded guilty in 2013 to bribery and conspiracy charges, though he fled to Pakistan to avoid punishment. He was arrested by Pakistan authorities last year and was sentenced in abstentia Dec. 1. He remained in custody in Pakistan, pending extradition.

As part of his sentence, he also was ordered to forfeit $3.2 million he made from his crimes.

Ahmad worked for two Democratic treasurers in Ohio, then for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Three co-defendants also have been convicted and sentenced.
