Fatal accident closes interstate

COLUMBUS – A man was killed when he walked in front of a box truck while attending to a disabled car on the side of a busy interstate highway on the North Side Monday, causing the freeway to be closed for several hours during the investigation.

Michael Fowle was on the right shoulder of southbound I-71, just south of Morse Road, with the hood up on a 2007 Mini Cooper at 1:16 p.m. when police say he inexplicably walked in front of the 2006 Isuzu box truck driven by Thomas Bergman in the right lane of the roadway and was struck, Sgt. Brooke Wilson of the Accident Investigation Unit said.

Fowle died a short time later at Grant Medical Center.

The accident is still under investigation, Wilson said.

The southbound lanes of I-71 were shut down at I-270 on the North Side for several hours during the investigation.
