Fight turns deadly

COLUMBUS – A man is under arrest, charged with murder in connection with the 113th homicide of the year in Columbus.

:UPDATE 10/02/20 10:27 a.m. Police have identified the victim of this homicide.

Deshaun Cunningham allegedly shot 53-year-old Michael Anthony Morefield during a fight in the parking lot of a gas station at Cleveland Avenue and Weber Road just before 8:44 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.

Officers found the victim lying in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died at 9:34 p.m.

Witnesses indicated that the victim and Cunningham, 41, were engaged in a physical confrontation which led to the victim being shot, Shimberg said. The suspect, who was identified as, was charged with murder for causing the death of the victim.

A couple reported someone fired at their SUV on an East Side interstate Friday night, hitting their vehicle but leaving the man and woman uninjured, police said.

Shaundretta Boykins, 47, was driving her Honda CR-V southbound on I-270, south of I-670 at approximately 10:30 p.m. when she heard three “pops” she believed to be gunshots and a tractor trailer that was traveling in the same direction on her driver’s side, Sgt. Doug Jones of the Felony Assault Unit said.

Her passenger, 44-year-old Kevin Boykins, also reported hearing a gunshot before the couple exited the interstate at E. Main Street exit. Jones says they called police after arriving home and finding a bullet hole on the rear driver side of the SUV.

A 44-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries after being shot at a Far East Side strip club early Saturday, police said. 1:20 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Zechariah Barber told investigators he was shot in the right thigh inside the Confidential Gentlemen’s Club, 1962 Lake Club Drive, by an unknown male at approximately 1:20 p.m., said Det. Rob Stubblefield of the Felony Assault Unit.

The victim was driven to a local hospital by an individual who was interviewed at the hospital, Stubblefield said.
