COLUMBUS – Columbus fire personnel are mourning the loss of a former firefighter who died Thursday of an infection related to injuries he suffered more than two years ago when he was struck by lightning.
Lieutenant Stuart Tudor, who retired on Sept. 2, after 25 years with the Division of Fire, most of it on the West Side, died early Thursday as a result of an infection attributed to injuries sustained when he was struck by lightning at MAPFRE Stadium on June 28, 2014, division spokesman Battalion Chief Steve Martin said.
Tudor was struck by lightning while volunteering as a board member for Get Behind the Badge, a first responders organization which helps raise money for police officers and firefighters who are injured in the line of duty, Martin said.
Tudor joined the Division in 1991 and was promoted to lieutenant in 2002, when Martin says he served as a supervisor in the fire alarm office, overseeing the intake of emergency calls and dispatching of runs.
He retired from Station 10, on W. Broad Street in the Franklinton area, where he had spent most of his career, Martin said.
A memorial service is planned at the Columbus Professional Firefighters, Local 67, union hall, 379 W. Broad St.; Sunday, Oct, 23. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. Service will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Per the family, contributions in memory of Lt. Stu Tudor can be made to the Local 67 Columbus Firefighters Foundation, 379 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215
