COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two states who have fought for decades over who was “first in flight” are teaming up to battle another state’s claim to the title.
Ohio displays the phrase “Birthplace of Aviation” on its Ohio Pride plates (above) and North Carolina claims the title of “First In Flight” on its plates.
Lawmakers from the two states have announced a campaign to debunk Connecticut’s claims that someone flew an aircraft there two years before the Wright Brothers made their historic flight.
Ohio and North Carolina say the new first-flight claims not only hurt Wright Brothers-related tourism in both states, but also at their shared aerospace heritage.
“Birthplace of Aviation” is one of several background slogans which Ohio vehicle owners can choose to display on Ohio Pride plates.
