Funeral arrangements for slain sheriff’s deputy set

BATAVIA (AP) — Funeral arrangements for a sheriff’s deputy fatally shot in a 12-hour standoff in Ohio in which another deputy was wounded have been announced.

Authorities say Detective Bill Brewer of the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office was killed in the weekend standoff by a man who was barricaded in an apartment in Pierce Township, about 20 miles east of Cincinnati. The other deputy was treated for a gunshot to his ankle.

Services are set for 11:00 a.m. Friday at Mount Carmel Christian Church in Batavia, followed by a procession to Pierce Township Cemetery.

The 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office is survived by a wife and 5-year-old son.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the man accused of fatally shooting Brewer says the man has been under psychiatric care in the past.

Wade Edward Winn, 23, is charged with aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder with bond set at $10 million.

Attorney Jay Clark confirmed Monday that Winn broadcast parts of the standoff live to his followers on Instagram. He says he believes the content of his client’s video indicates “he was trying to get help because he truly thought he was being threatened.”

Clark also said that Winn has “articulated to me that he is extremely remorseful.” The attorney says he doesn’t think Winn “fully appreciates exactly what happened or how it happened.”
